It’s been said by many that siding with the top seeds is a good strategy. However, in single-game elimination format, any David with a hot hand can bring down Goliath.
Kansas, the nation’s number one team during the regular season and the top seed in the NCAA Tournament, faced the sling of an unlikely arm from North Iowa: Ali Farokhmanesh. His clutch bucket and free throws struck down the Jayhawks of Gath. But the team effort from North Iowa kept them in the running; the total effort should be noted most highly.
How about that Ivy League?
Cornell is the first Ivy League team to make the Sweet Sixteen in more than 30 years. Against Wisconsin, Cornell made half of its three-point tries, which proved to be a great equalizer. Yet everyone was still shocked that the team came out on top by double digits.
Here’s the secret: Play solid defense, rebound and make the outside shot and you can beat any team on any given day. That’s why the NCAA Tournament is so exciting – mixing so many disparate styles of team play in tournament games makes for interesting matchups. Good coaches find holes and press the advantage.
Respect Xavier, says Brad Young of Buster Sports
For the third straight year, the Xavier Musketeers are in the Sweet Sixteen. That should be enough to signal that you shouldn’t discount them, but the Pitt Panthers (in somewhat of a down year) figured they’d make good kitty food. However, Jordan Crawford lit them up for 27, and Xavier returned to its regular haunt amid the field of 16. Some coaches know how to recruit and prepare their players, and Chris Mack of Xavier is such a coach.
