A Presidential Meeting: All Five Presidents

In an historic meeting, unlike anything ever seen since 1981, the three past United States presidents, the current one, and the one to be, met for lunch and chit-chat. And what did they talk about? Time and memoirs may let us know, but judging by a remark Mr Clinton made to President George W. Bush before they headed into the adjoining dining room, there was plenty of room for idle conversation at the ultimate power lunch.

Bubba was heard saying, "I just love that rug,", looking down at the pale gold rug with sunbeam design that Mr Bush brought with him in 2000 and which will shortly be packed off to his home state Texas. Get your own rug! :-)

It was, as Mr Obama said, an "extraordinary gathering", with all the living US presidents - three former, one current and one future - offering a picture of national unity in troubled times. Standing between Bush father and son for a photo opportunity in the Oval Office, the President-Elect thanked his predecessors for joining him and said he valued the opportunity to "get advice, good counsel and fellowship from these individuals" and learn "from their successes" before taking office on Jan 20.

Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter completed the historical line-up of one of the world's most exclusive clubs, in which Mr Obama stood out for his youth and his race, his presence reminding Americans of the history they made electing the first black leader since the foundation of the nation. But I'm sure they covered the more serious matters.

They ate from the White House daily menu and talked for about an hour. Protocol requires that the bitter rivalries of old campaigns are forgotten on such occasions, and there was likely to be no shortage of advice for Mr Obama as he prepares to take over in a darker hour than any of his predecessors. All of the living presidents were last at the White House in 1981: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and the incumbent Ronald Reagan. On that day, all the presidents stood in a circle inside the White House, discussing news of the world. The dominant topic? Then, as now, it was the Middle East.

Three Democrats and two Republicans. Maybe we could get some Muslims, Christians, and Jews together one day!
