Computer Mouse Icon

Many people experiment with whether or not to add a pointer trail to their mouse to give it the effect of displaying its motion like a vapor trail. Along with changing the trail properties, people have the option to adjust the speed and sensitivity of the icon itself as well as the double click speed.

If the double click speed is slowed down then that allows for more time between two clicks than usual for the two clicks to be counted as a "double click." The most interesting adjustable option and the one that many people enjoy tinkering with is the ability to get rid of the plain white cursor altogether and replace it with a unique image of the individuals choosing. It has gotten to the point where people can go as far as putting a picture of their pets (or even if they are so narcissistic, themselves!) as their cursor so that a miniature sized version of fluffy flies around the screen selecting links and folders all day.

Changing your computer mouse icon can really throw off other people who happen to use your computer for a quick search or to check their email. Many people overlook, completely forget, or perhaps are even wholly unaware that such a seemingly trivial configuration change can be made on every modern computer. The computer mouse icon has long been an iconic symbol and when this is changed many people find it to be off putting and annoying. Computer users have become so accustomed to that tiny black-rimmed white pointer icon that they do not often realize how attached they are to it until it is changed to something less neutral and basic (like an image of a flower or a puppy for instance).

Though it seems unlikely that any industry leader will be writing an unabridged history of the computer mouse icon anytime soon, the small plain arrow has been a staple of the personal computing world practically since the inception of computers and that persistent little image does not appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
